Do Japanese Citizens Need a Visa to Vietnam?

Japanese citizens DO NOT need to obtain a visa to Vietnam if:

  • they stay in Vietnam for no longer than 15 days and
  • either of the following requirements is met:
    • they have never been in Vietnam or never been in Vietnam with visa waiver;
    • if they have been in Vietnam with visa waiver(s), their arrival date does not fall within 30 days from exit date of their last visa-free stay in Vietnam.

And then, whether they visit Vietnam with or without a visa, the Japanese citizens still need to ensure:

  • Their Japan passport is valid for at least 6 months following arrival date in Vietnam;
  • Their Japan Passport has 2 blank pages;

How to Apply for Vietnam visa for Japanese Citizens

The Japanese citizens need a visa to Vietnam if they wish to stay in Vietnam for more than 15 days or they come back to Vietnam within 30 days following the exit date of their last stay in Vietnam with a visa waiver.

And in this case, there are 02 ways to get a Vietnam visa for Japanese citizens.

1. Apply at Local Vietnam Embassy

Contact the local Vietnam embassy/consulate in Japan (if you are residing in Japan), or in nearby countries (if you are not residing in Japan currently) to get visa stamp on your passport before departure to Vietnam.

Here is the common procedure to apply for visa at Vietnam embassy in Japan:

  • Prepare the following documents:
    • 1 Application form (donwload here) with an attached photo,
    • Original Passport,
    • Visa approval document issued by the Immigration Department (Ministry of Public Security) or the Consular Department, the Department of External Relations of the Ho Chi Minh city if applying for visa approval letter;
    • A prepaid return envelope if the applicant requests the visa be returned by mail.
  • Visit the Vietnam embassy for submitting the visa application documents and pay the visa fee
  • Visit the embassy again to get the visa and original passport or get them sent by mail.

2. Apply Vietnam Visa Online (Recommended)

This is called a Vietnam visa on arrival (VOA). It is the best way to get Vietnam visa for Japanese citizens entering Vietnam via one of the following airports:

  • Noi Bai in Ha Noi
  • Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City
  • Da Nang in Da Nang
  • Cat Bi in Hai Phong
  • Cam Ranh in Khanh Hoa
  • Lien Khuong in Da Lat
  • Phu Quoc on Phu Quoc island
  • Can Tho in Can Tho.

With VOA, you apply online via website Vietnamvisaservice by:

Filling out the secure online application form, and make payment of service fee;
Receiving the visa approval letter by email, normally in 2 working days (for tourist visa) or 7 working days (for business visa);
Getting visa stamped upon arrival at Vietnam airport and pay for stamping fee there.
